Specialization and Philosophy of Treatment:

I specialize in treating persons with anxiety disorders and depressive disorders including:

anxiety
• depression
• obsessive-compulsive disorders
• dissociative disorders
• sexual identity and coming out issues
• difficulties in forming or maintaining satisfactory relationships
• those who are dissatisfied and who want to make changes in their lives.

I consider myself a Relational Analyst or Relational Psychologist; I believe one's history of important relationships and one's ability to form and maintain fulfilling relationships are critical to one's psychological and emotional well-being. We begin treatment with an initial consultation in which both patient and I evaluate the likelihood that we can work well together. If we decide to continue, then we initiate a series of meetings that are likely to continue over a period of months or years.

The prolonged period of treatment is necessary because we not only explore the patient's history of relatedness to significant others; we also, in our talks together during the sessions, tend to reenact many of the critical aspects of those relationships. Progress for the patient depends upon our ability to explore and fully appreciate the meaning of the enactments that occur between us. And the ability to examine and appreciate the complexity of these enactments requires a bond of mutual trust that can only develop over time.
